DescriptionBorn in Aichi, Japan in 1980. Lives and works in Kanazawa, Ishikawa.

From 2000-2004, Takemura Yuri majored in ceramics at Aichi University of the Arts. Thereafter, from 2005-2006, she undertook an artist residency at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shiga, then relocated to Kanazawa, where she underwent training at Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo (crafts workshop) and has since exhibited works. Takemura produces tea-bowls, tableware, flower vases, and other vessels having practical utility – all of them creatively designed pieces having a modern feel. She may apply gold or silver over a black, blue, grey, or brown porcelain-like vessel body, and she sometimes employs patterns of dots or stripes.

These are tea-bowls for use in the tea ceremony. Depending on one’s vantage point, they may also be considered bowls for café au lait. They can, in fact, be used for either, for they are works possessing that kind of easy flexibility. Takemura’s ceramic pieces take everyday use as a base, so she keeps utility in mind. Because they are premised on use in contemporary lifestyles, her works are never stiff and formal. They are vessels to be enjoyed the way a woman enjoys day-to-day fashions. Such is Takemura’s creative concept. They might be called ‘kogei’ (craft) that corresponds to design.
