DescriptionBorn in Yeongju, Korea in 1964. Lives and works in Seoul.

Lee Bul has been exhibiting since the second half of the 1980s. She started out with performances relating to her physical identity, and later began unveiling three-dimensional works made using a range of materials including ceramics, balloons, and raw fish. By weaving together traditional icons from art history and mythology and popular motifs with diverse elements including her own personal experiences and imagination, Lee Bul conjures up a highly original world that transcends cultures and time. She also creates works that seem to manifest the fusion of the organic and inorganic by incorporating contemporary materials such as polyurethane and stainless steel.

"Siren" is based on the nymph of the sea of the same name from Greek mythology, whose upper body is that of a woman and lower body that of a bird. According to mythology, she enchanted sailors with her beautiful voice, shipwrecking countless boats in the process. Taking the iconography from this myth as her starting point, Lee Bul came up with a form that is complex and organic by using extremely contemporary techniques such as applying polyurethane to an aluminum armature and coating it with enamel. "Apparition", whose title derives from Gustave MOREAU’s depiction of Salome, is made from various materials including crystal and glass beads and polyurethane. With "Cyborg W8", the concept of a manmade creature that incorporates both organic and mechanical components is transformed in accordance with Lee’s unique expressive language. As these pieces demonstrate, Lee incorporates traditional iconography and themes that have been handed down through history, art history, and mythology and weaves them together with her personal experiences and imagination, giving rise to a spectacular world that transcends culture and time.
