Nakamura Takuo C-unit is a group of Kanazawabased crafts artists who gathered together to work for “Chabako Project” in 2010. The unit is made up of Aoki Yuriko in metalwork, Motoe Kazumi in weaving basket, Nakamura Takuo in ceramics, Oomura Shuichi in lacquer, Sakai Shinobu in woodwork, Takemura Yuri in ceramics and Yoshida Yasuki in glasswork. Tokyo-based Satoh Taku is a graphic designer, whose work ranges from product design, such as for chewing gum and milk, to general direction of the NHK ETV program, “DESIGN-AH.” He is responsible for the design of logo of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Nakamura Takuo C-unit and Satoh Taku worked together for the first time for “Chabako Project.”

This work was produced as a new project especially for “First International Triennale of KOGEI in Kanazawa.” Each of seven Kanazawa-based artists including Nakamura Takuo is usually producing works using different materials individually such as metal, bamboo, wood, glass and ceramics. With designer Satoh Taku joining them, they worked together on the theme of chabako (box to contain tea ceremony utensils). A collaboration between designer and craft artist is often performed, but this project differs from many examples in the past. What Satoh did was not to specify the shape but to define the ratio of size reduction and expansion specified on a scale of one to five. The form is closely related to materials and techniques, and Satoh chose not to break their close relationships. Through a simple act of changing sizes, the designer aims to separate functions from tools. Tools, from which functions are taken away, can be chosen and combined by the user every time they play new roles as tea utensils.
