DescriptionBorn in High Wycombe, UK in 1948. Lives and works in London.

Opened his own metal work studio after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1972. Rowe was recognized from early on by exhibiting in various international exhibitions. Since 1984, he has been a member of staff at the Royal College of Art, now a Senior Tutor of Department of Metalwork and Jewellery, and has had many achievements as an educator. Consistent making of containers forms the basis of his work, and his pieces generate a polysemic understanding that is almost architectural. With his polished sense of form and color, remarkable metalwork and coloring technique, he has had influence in the field of metalwork beyond national boundaries.

Parts of a container such as body, handle and lid are replaced with geometric forms, mainly cylinders so as to attempt reinterpretation of the structure of a container. At first glance, the piece looks like an abstract object finished in gold leaf, but in actual fact, it is a ‘container’ that has a lid comprised of two cylinders plus one cylinder stretched like an ellipse. When the two cylinders are lifted, the internal space of the ‘container’ is revealed underneath. This work urges us to reconsider the deconstruction and reconstruction of the context in which the object is placed as well as the relationship between form and space in an architectural perspective.
