| 作品解説（英） | Yanagi is known for exhibiting works on the themes of history and the state with a dynamic sense of scale and humor, at times using familiar objects and deploying metaphors. This work, which resembles a gigantic plastic model prior to assembly, is based on the Akitsushima, an Imperial Japanese Navy seaplane carrier that was sunk off Coron Island in the Calamian Islands (Philippines). The ship’s name is also an alternate appellation for Yamato Province (an ancient designation for Japan). The artist personally dove to the sea floor and conducted a survey of the sunken ship’s hull, and reconstructed it based on data. The numerals and letter “50 I” in the title indicate the model’s scale and material (“I” for iron). |
