| Work Description | Yayoi KUSAMA "Revived Soul" 1995 acrylic on canvas Having experienced visual and auditory hallucinations since childhood, Kusama began making paintings with polka-dot and net patterns as a means of alleviating her suffering. In 1957 she moved to the US, where she exhibited enormous two-dimensional works, soft sculptures made with fabric, and installations incorporating mirrors. In the late 1960s, she engaged in happenings including body painting events and antiwar protests. For the artist, the creative process is in part a battle against the visions and compulsions that continue to assail her. This commissioned work on the theme of “Hiroshima” is based on the idea that souls of those who perished in the atomic bombing have arisen from the ground and reside in the hearts of those still living. |

| Work Description (Korean) | 구사마 야요이《되살아나는 영혼》1995 유소년기부터 환각과 환청을 경험한 작가는 그 고통에서 도망치기 위하여 물방울과 그물 모양을 모티프로 한 회화를 그리기 시작합니다. 1957년에는 미국으로 건너가 거대한 평면 작품과 천을 소재로 한 부드러운 조각, 거울을 이용한 설치미술 등을 발표, 60년대 후반에는 보디 페인팅과 반전운동 등의 활동을 했습니다. 구사마에게 있어 제작 활동이란, 자신을 덮쳐오는 강박관념과의 싸움입니다. ‘히로시마’를 테마로 한 제작 위탁을 받은 이 작품은 원폭으로 죽은 사람들의 영혼이 땅에서 되살아나 살아 있는 우리의 마음속에 자리하고 있다는 생각을 바탕으로 그려졌습니다. |
