| Work Description | Sano Nui "Indigo Blue in Afterimage" 1988 oil on canvas Sano studied Yoga (Western-style) painting at Joshibi University of Art and Design, and established a distinctive painting style with a palette dominated by blue. She showed work actively in group exhibitions, particularly those of the Shin-Seisaku Society and the Women Artists Association, while at the same time teaching at her alma mater and fostering artists of younger generations. This work is based on the artist’s impressions of Hiroshima when she viewed it from the air, and expresses the changing face of the city over time using various shades of blue. The artist placed indigo in the center as “the central image of the theme of ‘Hiroshima,’” and described the varying nuances of the blue color planes as representing “the stream of time.” |
