Explanation | Wu Jian’an is an artist from Beijing, China. With his profound knowledge of folk art, such as paper cut-out and shadow pictures, combined with a polished sense of design means he stands out among young Chinese artists. His works consist of paper-cut out-like forms, which are constructed by positive and negative space and possess a characteristic symmetry. The shapes appear three-dimensional as the artist encapsulates actual shadows into the work and the shiny metal material brings about a mysterious atmosphere. Angel-like figures sensuously caressing each other and others cruelly devouring each other are arranged in a contrasting manner. This work emerged from the paper cut-out picture tradition but its three-dimensionality, the artist’s novel use of material and strength of his design all contribute to the freshness of the artistic expression. |
