| Explanation | He Yunchang is a performance artist from Yunan, China who lives in Beijing. Since the 1990s, he has garnered much attention for creating works that push his body and spirit to the utmost limit. This piece is a video recording of a performance held in Kunming, Yunan Province on March 24th 2001. He determinedly wrestled against 100 male workers, immigrants from farming villages, for 66 continuous minutes (the video is edited to 30 minutes). The result was 18 wins and 82 losses. This situation, where an individual faces the group in such a hopeless challenge is ridiculous to the point of simplicity. In the huge contrast between the wins and losses, certain elements of individual existence are brought to the fore. The techniques that the artist was to employ in successive artworks can be seen in this piece. |
