Explanation | The artist is one of the most important and active Indian artists in the world. This video installation was made during Nalini Malani’s residency at Fukuoka Asian Art museum. For this piece, she projected different video images on three walls: the back, right and left walls of the space and also on the floor, which was sprinkled with salt. This work is based on the play “Hamletmachine” by German playwright Heiner Müller. The artist, working from a feminist perspective and with a critical mindset, reveals contradictions and absurdities in today’s society; perceptively tackling issues such as Indian fundamentalism and the problems faced by women. The Fukuoka based Butoh Dancer, Nobuo Harada, features in this film. |
