ExplanationBani Abidi was born in Karachi, Pakistan. Based on her experience studying in the US, the artist dressed up and played the role of both a Pakistani and an Indian news presenter and read a proverb, which alludes to the relationship between Pakistan and India, in the style of a news report. The proverb actually has the same meaning in both countries even though the “India” and “Pakistan” parts are interchanged in each. It implies a tension between the two countries that share a common culture and climate, but that do not cease their rivalry. There are two other pieces of hers that take the same theme, Mango and Anthems.
