| Explanation | Lain Singh Bangdel is a Nepali artist, novelist, and art historian, and studied art at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Bangdel played an important role as a founder of Nepali modern art by introducing oil and abstract painting to the country. Made during the 1950s when the artist was still living in Europe, the style of this work shows the influence of Picasso's Blue Period. Based on the poem "Muna Madan" written by a Nepali poet and novelist Laxmi Prasad Devkota, the work portrays the pathos of Nepalese people in the lowest strata of society. Muna stands on the right accompanied by a mother of her lover, Mudan, who has gone to Tibet for work. Bangdel was the first artist to introduce modern art to Nepal. |
