| Explanation | The painter is a pioneering figure in modern Sri Lankan art. He studied art in London and Paris and was one of the founders of Group 43 --a modern artists' group in Sri Lanka. This portrait was made while he was in London. It is a picture of his aunt (younger sister of his mother), Margaret de Soyza, who spent her summers in London. The artist captures her as a dignified woman from upper class Sri Lankan society. |
