| Explanation | The artist is from Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China. Inspired by needlework that she would do during her pregnancy, the artist has been working on installation works with strings since the middle 1990s. This installation consists of a photograph and numerous balls of thread. The photograph shows the artist herself just after she gave birth to her baby. The balls of thread represent the eggs ovulated by a woman in her lifetime, and the social conventions that tie women down to pregnancy, childbearing and child rearing. The work raises gender issues such as the role of women in patriarchal societies, while also symbolizing the relationship between life and sex. It is also deeply related to the artist's personal experiences. |
