| Explanation | Patna is the central city of the state of Bihar, India. Beginning in the Eighteenth century, Patna became a center for British factories that processed products such as opium and grains. The Patna school of painting was frequently commissioned by the East India Company. Their style combined traditional Indian miniature painting with Western perspective and chiaroscuro. This piece is among the finest examples of the Patna school. This exotic work depicts Indian upper-class ladies listening to music while playing on a swing. |
