ExplanationAn amateur artist born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1868, Tudor Rajapakse learned painting from Seymour Lucas (1849-1923), a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in England during his stay in Europe. After returning to Ceylon, he was active in exhibiting his work at the Ceylon Society of Arts. He was thereafter inaugurated as its chairman. This piece's model is unknown; it is assumed to be the same model as used in his other piece, Green Saree (Collection: Colombo Art Gallery). This piece conveys the academic style that was prevalent in Sri Lankan art before the modernist style was introduced by the “43 Group.”
