ExplanationVictorio Edades is known as a pioneer of modern art in the Philippines. He was born in Pangasinan Province. Having been blessed with a talent for art since his childhood, Edades moved to the US and majored in art and architecture at the University of Washington. He was deeply impressed by the modern European art, such as the works of Cezanne, on display at the Armory Show exhibition in 1922. The models in this work are Jane Noble Garott, a matron of the Filipino clubhouse near the university, and her daughter, and his future wife, Jean. Jean’s red dress is skillfully rendered to sharpen the contrast between red and green. After returning to the Philippines, Edades caused a stir in the Filipino art scene and played an essential role in promoting modernism. Like many of his followers, including Carlos Francisco and Galo Ocampo, who became major Filipino modern artists, he left behind outstanding achievements as an educator.
