Explanation | Chatchai Puipia is a leading figure in Thai contemporary painting. He has continuously explored challenging themes and forms of expression in his work. “Han Kwang (Wandering About)” was created in the early 90s when the artist was experimenting with various styles in search for new expressions. On this irregularly shaped canvas, the audience finds an abstracted figure of an elephant. While expressing his own internal world where real and virtual mix together, the artist inserts his critical view on urbanization and environmental disruptions caused by rapid development, which destroys the habitat of the elephant, the symbol of Thailand. |
