| Explanation | This work refers to the "Six Gentlemen of the Hundred Days' Reform (1898)" - the eminent Chinese reformers in the late Qing Dynasty, Tan Sitong, Yang Rui, Liu Guangdi, Lin Xu, Yang Shenxiu and Kang Guangren. The painting depicts the moment of their public execution. They stand fearlessly and undaunted. In China, such heroes and martyrs of modern history are often taken as subject matter in painting to facilitate historical understanding. |
