ExplanationThe artist sees life in the present-day Indian subcontinent, full of hardships and turmoil, as a strange mixture of indigenous culture and culture brought about by British colonial rule. The first of these three paintings depicts the invasion of indigenous culture by a foreign culture, the second the illusion created by political deception, the third cultural contradiction and confusion. The bright colors and composition of the paintings are influenced by popular art forms such as rickshaw paintings and movie billboards.
