| Explanation | I Ketut Budiana is a painter from Bali, Indonesia. He is known to depict mysterious forces beyond the reach of human knowledge and understanding, such as the monsters and gods that inhabit the island of Bali. This work features Barong, an imaginary animal that is most beloved by the Balinese people. They are representations of supernatural power in the form of a sacred animal, most often a lion. Usually enshrined in a corner of a Hindu temple, they are brought out during regular festivities or in the occurrence of an epidemic and are paraded through the village accompanied by villagers. This painting also shows a magnificent Barong parading with villagers. Monsters lurk in the eerie clouds that surround them. |
