| Explanation | I Ketut Budiana is a painter from Bali, Indonesia. He is known to depict mysterious forces beyond the reach of human knowledge and understanding, such as the monsters and gods that inhabit the island of Bali. The guardian deity, who appears almost demon-like with its serpentine genitalia, is a talisman called Tumbal, which the artist painted based on impression. In this work, Tumbal, who protects houses and people from unwanted intruders, is somewhat presented with an air of humor. |
