Explanation | Yun Hyongkeun was born in Chngcheongbuk-do, South Korea in 1928. After graduating from the Department of Western Studies at the College of Fine Arts, Hongik University in 1957, the artist was active as one of the leading artists of the Korean Dansaekhwa art movement. This work shows a stain of blue-black oil paint dripping on and seeping into the canvas's uncoated surface. While there seems to be common ground shared with the American artist Morris Louis, this work stresses the creative potential in an intuitive, random, and unintentional act of creation that stands contrary to Louis’ creative act. A simple color composition drawn using natural colors, brown paint for the earth and blue paint for the sky, is one with the Korean view of nature. |
