| 作品解説(日本語) | 杉木立は影として黒で表現され、その背景には色彩があり、光が感じられます。画面左下に浮かび上がる円形は、その光源となる月が映っているようです。 須田は、京都帝国大学（現・京都大学）の美学美術史を専攻し、その後デッサンを学び始め、２８歳の時にヨーロッパに渡りスペインで約４年間模写や写生をして独自の画風を確立しました。本作では、ペインティングナイフや釘で色の層を削る中で、光と影の複雑な関係を見事に表現しています。 |
| Writing text | A grove of Japanese cedar trees is depicted in black as a shadow, while the background is in color, bringing a sense of light. The source of that light, the moon, seems to be reflected as a circle in the bottom left of the painting. After majoring in aesthetics and art history at Kyoto Imperial University (now Kyoto University), Suda Kunitaro began studying drawing and moved to Europe at the age of 28, where he spent around four years in Spain sketching and making reproductions, establishing a unique painting style in the process. This piece brilliantly conveys the complex relationship between light and shadow by paring away the layers of color with a painting knife and nail. |
