Writing textThis is a portrait of Mononobe no Moriya, a member of a powerful clan of conservatives at the Japanese court in the Asuka period (552–645). Standing upright with a frown on his face, Moriya wears a cap and the white garments worn by the nobility when they attended the court. Another two figures stand behind him. The artist, Yasuda Yukihiko, was so committed to realism that, on reflection, he felt that the realistic expression was too vivid. He has drawn the severe facial expression of the figure in fine detail as if expressing the inner character of Moriya, who opposed the introduction of Buddhism to Japan.
