| 作品解説(日本語) | 画面上半部に密集する武者の集団。『平家物語』の名場面の一つ「一の谷の合戦」での源義経(みなもとのよしつね)の一軍です。「鵯越」と呼ばれた険しい崖を背に陣を構えていた平家に対し、義経軍は崖の上から急襲をかけ、不意を突かれた平家は敗走しました。下半分の余白との落差により一軍の「勢い」を、その余白の中に点を打つように描き込まれた一羽の鳥により「高さ」を表現しています。作者の半古は、武者絵や美人画を得意としました。 |
| Writing text | A group of warriors are crowded into the upper half of the painting. They are the troops of the military commander Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159–1189) during the battle at Ichinotani, a scene from the 13th-century epic The Tale of the Heike. The Taira clan had set up camp with their backs against a steep cliff at Hiyodori pass, but Yoshitsune’s warriors launched a surprise attack from the top of the cliff. Caught off guard, the Taira clan fled. The momentum of the warriors is expressed by the drop into empty space in the lower half of the painting, while a single bird, like a small dot in all that empty space, expresses height. The artist, Kajita Hanko, specialized in depictions of warriors and beautiful women. |
