Writing textThe scene by the window is depicted with short brushstrokes. Circles are an image that recurs in the painting in the form of the moon, which is named in the painting’s title, the elegantly-shaped glass vessel, and the white dish. Nakayama Takashi moved to France after completing the graduate course at the Tokyo Fine Arts School (the current Tokyo University of the Arts). One of the artists who influenced him while he was there was Henri Matisse (1869–1954). In this painting, Nakayama incorporates subjects that Matisse adopted, such as the window, the glass vessel, and the goldfish, while also adeptly simplifying and arranging the forms and colors of the background to create his own unique painting that invites the viewer’s gaze to move around.
