Writing textThis is a set of three paintings of koi fish. In the first, the koi is painted from a position directly overhead, together with pale, indistinct water plants. The India ink used in the bottom left of the composition expresses the depth of the water. The second painting captures a side view of three koi swimming as a group. The viewer feels able to see their colors as well as their patterns, despite the use of monochrome India ink. The third painting depicts a koi twisting its body as it leaps into the air. The sense of lively motion is enhanced by the curved lines and the dots that resemble waterdrops on the left side of the painting. Maeda Seison, a frequent contributor to Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute) exhibitions, often used koi fish as his motif. In this charming work, he has used India ink to achieve diverse expression in each of the three paintings.
