作品解説(日本語)作品の表面を縦横に走る線は、電動ドリルによる痕跡です。合板にドリルを当て板の抵抗を受けながら描く線は、時には作家の意図を超えた偶然の弧を描き、それこそが斎藤の狙いでした。斎藤は日本における前衛美術の先駆的な存在で、常に表現とは何かを模索しました。絵画や彫刻等の枠から外れることから、展覧会への出品すら拒否されましたが、1930年前後には既に本作品のようなレリーフ状の半立体的な作品を制作していたのです。
Writing textThe lines running in all directions across the surface of the piece are the impressions left by an electric drill. The artist, Saito Yoshishige, created the lines by putting a drill to a sheet of plywood, meeting resistance from the wood, and occasionally generating unexpected curves which surpassed his intentions. This was precisely what he intended to achieve. Saito was a pioneering figure in the avant-garde movement in Japan who constantly explored the meaning of expression. He was already creating artworks in relief with a semi-three-dimensional quality like this around 1930. At the time, however, even exhibiting such works was not permitted because they did not conform to traditional artistic categories such as painting or sculpture.
