Writing textThe young woman’s expression is striking, with her eyelids half closed and her gaze directed slightly upward. This image was created by Ando Yoshishige using a technique he devised in his mid-fifties called toga (literally, “knife art”). Ando had begun to focus exclusively on his work as a painter shortly before turning 40, having studied oil painting at the Tokyo Fine Arts School (the current Tokyo University of the Arts) and graduated from the school’s teacher training course. With materials in short supply caused by the Second World War, Ando painted watercolors on traditional Japanese paper (washi) and used the razor-sharp edge of a knife to shave the paper’s surface as a means of adjusting the intensity of the color without using more paint. This also caused the fibers of the paper to become “fuzzy” in texture, casting a shadow on the image, and further contributing to the distinctive feel of Ando’s images of women.
