Writing textHoshi wo tabeta uma (The horse that ate stars) is a picture book with illustrations and text by Manabe Hiroshi himself. An old horse that is no longer able to work at the circus slips away. When it gets hungry, it eats stars that are made at a factory in the sky. The horse lives in the sky for a while, but when he descends to earth to go back to work, he meets a boy who lives on a farm. Overall, the color scheme is pale, but Manabe has created variation by restricting the number of colors on some pages. The twinkling stars are poetically expressed by spraying the pages with a mist of white paint.
