Biography

Nicholson was born in Denham, Buckinghamshire, England. After seeing the work of Picasso and Braque in Paris in 1921, he began painting landscapes and still lifes. In 1931 he met his second wife, Barbara Hepworth, and turned to geometric abstraction. On a trip to France in 1932 he met Picasso, Braque, Brancusi, Arp, and Calder. In 1933 and 1934 he participated in exhibitions of the Abstraction-Création group. In 1933 he organized the abstract art group Unit One with Hepworth and Henry Moore. He was very active in the avant-garde art movement in England and, in the latter half of the 1930s, produced a series of white reliefs that showed an absolute purity of abstract form. After his third marriage in 1957, he moved to Ticino, Switzerland, where he enjoyed the most productive period of his life.
