Biography

Maeda Seison was born in Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture. He moved to Tokyo in 1901 and began studying under Kajita Hanko. He joined the Koji-kai in 1907 and, along with his senior fellow student Kobayashi Kokei, diligently studied with Yasuda Yukihiko and Imamura Shiko. He exhibited in all of the group’s exhibitions until it was disbanded in 1913. He exhibited at the reorganized Inten in 1914 and became a member of the academy. He traveled to Europe with Kokei in 1922, where he studied Western painting and gained a renewed appreciation of the traditions of Asian painting. At the beginning of the Showa era, his works became increasingly flat and decorative. He became a member of the Imperial Art Academy in 1937. While continuing his creative activities with enthusiasm in the postwar era, he also served as a professor at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, general supervisor of the project to recreate the murals of the Kondo at Horyu-ji Temple, and chief supervisor of the project to copy the murals of the Takamatsuzuka Tomb.
