Biography

Kojima was born in Kyoto and majored in Japanese-style painting at the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts. While a student, he won the New Artist’s Prize at the Shinseisaku-kyokai exhibition. In 1973, he became a member of the Japanese-style painting section of the Shinseisaku-kyokai and, in the same year, received the Excellence Prize at the Yamatane Art Museum Appreciation Exhibition. The following year, when the Japanese-style painting section of the Shinseisaku-kyokai broke away from the organization and formed the Soga-kai, he joined the new group. He subsequently continued to exhibit at the Soga-kai exhibitions while also actively pursuing his creative work, holding solo exhibitions almost every year. According to the artist, “Just as everyone has their own way of living, they may have their own style of painting.” His style was not limited by the conventional techniques and expressions of Japanese-style painting, but actively incorporated techniques of Western painting to express a worldview as a person living in the contemporary world.
