Biography

Ito Shinsui began his artistic career as a pupil of Kaburaki Kiyokata. His work was accepted for the 12th Tatsumi Art Association Exhibition, as well as for the exhibition commemorating the re-establishment of the Japan Art Institute and the Ministry of Education Art Exhibition. In 1915, he participated in the formation of the Kyōdokai by Kiyokata’s pupils and also became involved in the shin-hanga (new prints) movement. He devoted considerable effort to producing frontispieces and illustrations for newspapers and magazines before turning to bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), for which he gained recognition at the 1927 Imperial Art Academy Exhibition. He is known as a painter who inherited the tradition of ukiyo-e while opening up new possibilities in depictions of contemporary life.
