Biography

Gertsch was born in a small village on the outskirts of Berne, Switzerland. After studying at a private painting school in Berne immediately after the war, he studied with Hans Schwarzenbach. He held his first one-man show in Berne in 1949. In the 1970s, he began creating massive photorealistic works in acrylic. In 1972, he exhibited at documenta in Kassel. He has lived in a mountain village on the outskirts of Berne since 1976. In 1978, he was invited to exhibit at the Venice Biennale. In 1980, a major retrospective of his work was held at the Kunsthaus Zurich. He shifted from painting to woodcut in 1986. In the early 1990s, he began creating massive woodcuts depicting streams and plants such as butterburs but later returned to painting.
