Biography

Christo was born in Gabrova, Bulgaria. His full name was Christo Javacheff. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, Sofia, he moved to Prague for 6 months. In 1956, after hearing the news of the Hungarian revolution, he moved to Vienna from Prague, and in 1958 he settled in Paris. He gained attention for his packaged works, wrapping familiar objects, for example, a paint box, in cloth. This operation transformed the object and focus attention on its natures as an object and the situation in which it was placed. After moving to America in 1964 with Jeanne-Claude, they began wrapping much larger things including historical buildings and land forms. They also found significance in the process of obtaining agreement to carry out these projects. A representative Christo and Jeanne-Claude work is "Surrounded Islands" (1983), in which they surrounded 11 islands in Biscayne Bay in Miami with floating fabric.
