SummaryHere a soft light enters a room where a small girl holding a cat waits for dinner. The white table, the girl, and the cat work together harmoniously, forming a stable pyramidal form which stands out form the background. An even firmer structure is given to the pictorial surface by two strong horizontal lines which work against the vertical movement created by the girl and the bottle placed on the table. The vantage point is fairly high, and the fruit at lower right is partially cut off to create a sense of intimacy. The snapshot-like perception displayed here was learned form “ukiyo-e.” A rich texture is created by the vigorous brushwork, and accents of bright color distributed among the calmer colors bring the picture together in a satisfying way. This is a work which demonstrates Bonnard's brilliant skills as an Initimist who raised familiar scenes to the level of art.
