| Description of works | 【Intriguing contrast between white and black】 A plum vase (Chinese: meiping) is a vessel with gently rounded shoulders and a body tapering as it descends. This meiping bears a rich design of blooming peonies, with their leaves stretching dynamically across the body in between a design of narrow flower petals on the top and bottom. The gray base of this vase was coated with white slip and then iron pigment was applied, after which specific areas of pigment were scraped off, revealing the white slip beneath and creating the pattern we see here. |
