Description of works【Symbol of status in ancient China】
鼎 (kanae, Chinese: ding) is the Chinese character for a two-handled, three-legged vessel with a body shaped like a pot. They were placed over a fire to cook meat or fish. A rod was put through the holes in the two handles to carry the jar, which served as a ritual vessel used by royalty for the worship of deities and ancestors. Only a designated number of ding were ownable according to the rank of the person. It was therefore also a symbol of royal authority. This piece, modeled after bronzeware, has stamped patterns on its body and the feet of an animal.
