Description of works【While steadily producing household ceramics, the Mino Kilns made some luxury items in medieval times】
The ancient kilns in Mino located in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, and its vicinity, are collectively called the Tono Kilns or the Mino Kilns. The Mino Kilns were one of the recipients of the pottery-making expertise for kaiyu-toki (ash-glazed ware) from the Sanage Kilns in Aichi Prefecture. In the 12th century CE, however, the Mino Kilns stopped using glazes and switched to manufacturing household items, such as bowls and plates. Up until the 15th century, they continued their focus on bowls and plates, but a small number of luxury items were also in their portfolio.
This piece is a shijiko (four-eared jar) with four lugs on its shoulders, modeled after the Chinese white porcelain jars. The production of shijiko in Mino did not last long, because of the Seto Kilns located adjacent to Mino, which mass-produced them.
