Description of worksThe Bizen Kilns — the only one of the six ancient kilns originating from sue ware
Of the rokkoyo (Japan’s six ancient kilns) still active in Japan with a history dating back to the Kamakura period, the Bizen Kilns are the only ones that were incepted and developed independently from the Sanage or Tokoname Kilns in Aichi Prefecture. In the 12th century CE, the Bizen Kilns inherited the production techniques of sue ware in Setouchi to launch a ceramic 【production site in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture. 】
Bizen ware were initially made in gray shades, as were sue ware, but in the latter half of the 13th century, the potters shifted the firing technique to one that achieved brown shades, as in this example. Some Bizen jars had combinations of bold straight lines or hajomon (wavy patterns) created using combs.
