Description of works【An example of the Yayoi people’s taste in fashion, but there once was a jar beneath】
This earthenware piece is shaped in what appears to be a man’s head and torso, and originally had a jar attached underneath. The jar, having been broken, is now missing. The top of the figure’s head is open and the torso hollowed out, which would have given access to the jar beneath.
It is a rare piece, giving us a glimpse of what the people of the Yayoi period looked like and the fashion they enjoyed. The figure’s face features a tattoo or makeup, the head sports a bandanna, and a necklace adorns the neck. The pierced ears are suggestive of earrings. There is also a mysterious line decoration extending from the shoulder to the chest.
