Description of works【Jar modeled after Chinese products with domestically-designed decorations】
Many of the forms of glazed works made by the Seto Kilns in medieval times (koseto or old Seto ware), were modeled after Chinese porcelain. Shijiko (jar with four ears [lugs] on its shoulder), such as this piece, is one representative style. They were modeled after four-eared white porcelain jars from Fujian Province, China, but their decorations were gradually modified to suit Japanese taste.
A typical modification seen in this work is the floral arabesque pattern on its shoulder using inka (pottery stamping), a decoration technique never used for Chinese white porcelain four-eared jars.
