Description of works【Domestic versions of imports】
As the trade between the Song dynasty and Japan expanded, an increased volume of Chinese ceramics and porcelain were imported into Japan in the 11th and 12th centuries CE. Of the three articles displayed here, the one on the left is shijiko (four-eared jar) produced in Fujian Province, China. Shijiko have four ears (lugs) on their shoulders, and because demand was increasing, production of domestic versions was called for.
The one in the center is a shijiko produced by the Sanage Kilns, which were active in incorporating the forms of Chinese porcelain mainly in the ninth century. This piece suggests that the Kilns were still active in modeling Chinese ceramics in the 12th century. The Seto Kilns are the producers of the shijiko on the right, which expanded the jar’s production in the 13th century and afterwards.
