Description of works【Medieval sue ware (stoneware) which had a strong influence on areas adjacent to the Sea of Japan】
The Suzu Kilns, located in Suzu City at the tip of the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, produced ceramics during the 12th through 15th centuries CE based on the techniques used for making ancient sue ware in the Hokuriku region. Capitalizing on its convenient location close to the sea, the Kilns shipped a great amount of Suzu ware to the regions east of Hokuriku that are adjacent to the Sea of Japan.
The products of these Kilns are gray or dark gray, as with ancient sue ware. The Kilns produced many kame (wide-mouthed jars) which were essential household items at that time. As exemplified by this work, parallel lines are present on kame bodies, resulting from the kame being pounded with a wooden plate engraved with parallel lines at the final stage of shaping. These lines are impressed on the surface creating patterns — a technique also used for ancient sue ware.
