| Description of works | 【Cute toy-dog-like komainu】 This pair is an example of significant deviations from the standardized pair of shishi (guardian lion) and komainu (lion-dog). Round bodies, short limbs, and shoe-button eyes make them resemble toy dogs. Whether or not such short-haired toy dogs existed in the Edo period is not known, but they impress people, past and present, as being “kawaii” (cute). Maybe these two were made with the intention of creating a pair of friendly-looking komainu, rather than ones with a dignified presence. |
