| Description of works | 【A variety of methods were used to create this komainu】 This pudgy komainu has very thin limbs, small ears, and a long nose, making it look like a wild boar. From the Muromachi period to date, ceramic komainu have not been mass-produced, and most have been custom-made to accommodate the requests of the shrines or the dedicators who ordered them. Therefore, production methods were apparently never standardized. Many ceramic komainu are hand-formed, including this one, but it is much lighter than other komainu. Looking from a distance, doesn’t its body resemble a big sake bottle? It is assumed that the body was first made on a potter’s wheel, just like sake flasks and bottles, and the limbs and other parts were added later. Its body is hollowed out, having been made on a potter’s wheel, which explains why it is lighter than others. |
