| Description of works | 【Green glaze makes this a unique pair】 Although this pair is made following a relatively standardized style, atypically, both have small horns. What makes this pair stand out the most, however, is the green glaze which is applied unevenly to their bodies. In the Edo period, the potters in Seto (Aichi Prefecture) and Mino (southern Gifu Prefecture) produced polychrome glazed ceramics. For komainu, they generally used ash glaze, iron glaze, and Ofuke glaze (ash glaze containing iron), which makes this pair glazed in green a rarity. It is assumed that either the dedicator or the owner of the kiln chose to use green glaze for a reason unknown to us. |
