| Description of works | 【Perplexed facial expressions】 KATO Shuntai was a ceramist of Seto who was active between the end of the Edo period and the early Meiji era. He demonstrated his pottery-making skills early in life and worked at the kiln operated by the Owari Domain. The thick eyebrows of these komainu make them look perplexed. Adding vibrant charm to this pair, the bases — normally left plain by other ceramists — have engraved floral patterns, which is typical of Shuntai’s creations. |
